Salmonellosis is an infection caused by Salmonella.  Persons who are afflicted with salmonellosis usually come down with symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pains, cramping and nausea within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food.

People who come down with salmonellosis usually require a few days to a week for their illness to run its course, and most recover without treatment. In some people, food poisoning with salmonellosis can be so severe that hospitalization is required to mitigate the symptoms. In these severe cases, the infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then on to other organs throughout the body. In certain cases, people with salmonellosis may die if not treated promptly with antibiotics.
