Premature Infants: Overview

An infant born before the 37th week of pregnancy is considered premature. The complications associated with prematurity depend largely on how early the child is born. The extent of organ development is critical with premature infants. Of major concern is the development of the lungs and brain prior to birth. Certain drugs may be administered to accelerate the development of these vital systems.
