PC-Spes is an over-the-counter
dietary supplement used to treat prostate
cancer. Formulated in the early 1990s, PC-Spes contains eight herbs: palmetto, licorice, reishi, Balkal Skullcap, Rabdosia, dyer's wood, mum, and San-qi ginseng. The supplement purportedly helps to prevent prostate cancer by countering testosterone with the herbs'
estrogen-like effects. Prostate cancer requires testosterone to thrive.
Investigators have determined that PC-Spes may cause
excessive bleeding,
tachycardia, and
hypotension in patients who exceed the recommended dosage. A Seattle man was recently hospitalized complaining of a rapid heartbeat, excessive bleeding, and low blood pressure, all caused by an overdose of PC-Spes.
