Milk: Overview

Milk, once America's favorite beverage, is declining in popularity because of the popularity of carbonated beverages such as Coke and Pepsi. In addition, recent concerns over the purity of milk may have impacted its popularity. Milk critics claim that growth hormones given to cows to increase milk production may cause boys and girls to reach puberty much earlier. However, there are no scientific studies confirming this link. Critics also claim that antibiotics given to cattle may increase human resistance. However, the Milk and Dairy Beef Residue Prevention program, overseen and enforced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), regularly tests milk for antibiotic contamination. Additionally, critics claim that milk may play a role in juvenile diabetes. There are conflicting studies on this assertion, and more research is needed.
