In 1998, health officials in Beaverton, Oregon discovered trichloroethlyene (TCE) contamination in a water well serving employees of a local toy company factory. The View-Master toy plant, which moved operations to Mexico in 2000, was leased and operated by Mattel Inc. when officials discovered the solvent's presence. Drums of degreaser waste were reportedly dumped on-site from the 1950s through the 1970s when Sawyers, Inc. and GAF Corporation owned and operated the factory. The plant began recycling the spent solvent in the 1970s and discontinued the large-scale use of TCE in 1980.

Based on examination of the site's hydrology, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) has estimated that TCE was present in the View-Master plant supply well for more than 20 years. Soon after this contamination was discovered, the View-Master supply well was shut down.
