Frito-Lay Contamination: Overview

Frito-Lay is attempting to seal court documents that allege contamination of some of the company's popular chips.

The documents were part of a 1994 lawsuit filed by Boston psychologist Edye Merzer. The suit claimed that tainted Doritos caused Merzer's neurological damage. Independent tests ordered by Merzer found that Doritos contained perchloroethylene, a cleaning solvent. During discovery, Frito-Lay revealed documentation of consumer complaints and other internal papers regarding the contamination.

However, Frito-Lay representatives said the company is now seeking to have the documents sealed because they were not presented as evidence.
