Encephalopathy, also known as cognitive dysfunction, is a condition characterized by short-term memory loss, equilibrium problems, depression, anxiety, diminished mental functioning, and mood swings. Experts say you may feel like you are "losing it" if you suffer from this condition.

Scientists recently linked exposure to diesel exhaust to encephalopathy. Railroad workers and others exposed to diesel exhaust in their daily employment may develop this condition.
