UPDATED MAY 26, 2007 - Advanced Medical Optics Inc. (AMO) announced late Friday afternoon (May 25, 2007) that it was issuing a voluntary recall of its Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution after epidemiologists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta found a link between it and a higher risk of eye infection in its users.
Advanced Medical Optics Inc. pulled the contact lens solution when the CDC study linked 138 patients - all users of Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution- to a water-borne parasitic corneal infection, acanthamoeba keratitis
. Epidemiologists from the CDC have managed to link the current outbreak of the parasitic infection to AMO’s soft contact lens solution statistically, although the exact link is not yet understood. A very serious eye infection, acanthamoeba keratitis normally requires the administration of antifungal and antibiotic medications. These infections occur almost exclusively in contact lens wearers. The CDC estimates that the risk of infection of acanthamoeba keratitis is at least seven times greater in users of AMO Complete MoisturePlus than those who do not use AMO’s soft contact lens solution.
AMO is cooperating fully with the CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to evaluate the information forthcoming in the latest study, and urges consumers who believe they are in possession of the discontinued product to discard it immediately. Consumers are also advised to throw away any contact lens that may have been used with AMO Complete MoisturePlus.
Serious side effects have occurred in patients with this eye infection, including reddening of the eye and sensitivity to light. About half of all cases report serious pain in the affected eye, and if not properly diagnosed and treated, acanthamoeba can lead to blindness.
See your doctor if you are experiencing any side effects associated with use of AMO Complete Moisture Plus. Additionally, it may be important to contact an attorney who can help you protect your legal rights. Please keep in mind that there are time limits within which you must file suit.
